Arnold Steinhardt was suffering severe pain in one of his fingers and contemplated the end of his career as violinist. He met with a friend, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and finally: “I blurted out my fear that I was nothing without the violin.” Ashkenasi said, ” If you think you are nothing without the violin, then you are also nothing with the violin.”
